By 2030, GÉANT and its member NRENs will collectively advance AI in two complementary dimensions
- AI for GÉANT: Integrating AI to optimise existing services
- GÉANT for AI: Developing the support infrastructure needed for the use of AI by the GÉANT community
Target 1. Apply AI to Enhance GEANT and NREN Operations - Innovate and improve operations of GÉANT services through responsible AI adoption.

Target 2. Build GEANT community AI Capability: - Plan the infrastructure and develop internal capability and skills that GEANT needs to develop and run its own AI use cases, and to support NRENs in developing theirs.

Target 3. AI Governance, Compliance, Ethics, and Sustainability Guidance - Provide the GEANT Association with a framework covering the legal, ethical, and environmental dimensions of AI adoption, so NRENs and GÉANT can adopt AI responsibly.

Target 4. Connectivity and Infrastructure for AI Workloads - Ensure GEANT and NRENs provide the connectivity, infrastructure and services required to support AI workloads for the European R&E community.

Target 5. Establish a NRENs AI “service” federated ecosystem - Enable GEANT and NRENs to share AI capabilities, expertise, models, data and services instead of duplicating isolated solutions, and ensure the network, services infrastructure and coordination efforts to support NRENs engaged in AI initiatives, to promote it is coordinated at pan-European scale.

Target 6. Enable R&E access to AI Resources - Position GEANT as a trusted broker and facilitator of AI capabilities for NRENs, simplifying access to commercial and sovereign AI services through shared procurement, negotiated terms, and a common service catalogue, rather than leaving each NREN to negotiate and evaluate AI providers independently.
