TitleDescription
OfferingGÉANT Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) is a service for dynamic circuit provisioning across multiple networks, enabling users to instantly create dynamic point-to-point circuits through a web-based user interface or through their own application.
Reason to Act It supports the NRENs mission to deliver cutting edge technology services and differentiate NRENs from conventional ISPs.
Customer Experience Users are able to provision circuits dynamically, without requiring a serial prolonged process to establish connectivity.
Benefits

NREN Benefits

  • Address user requirements for network capacity over multiple domains quickly and efficiently
  • Automate the multi-domain provisioning process
  • Reduce operational and administrative costs

NOC Staff Benefits

  • Quick setup of multi-domain circuits (typically seconds to minutes) in a more predictable, organised and less labour-intensive way
  • Predictable availability numbers, which are being tracked by monitoring systems

User Benefits

  • Transfer data with the reliability of dedicated point-to-point circuit, and with the flexibility of IP service
  • Reserve bandwidth for planned events or experiments in advance
  • Quick provision of high bandwidth for short periods of time which fits the nature of data exchange patterns in many projects
  • Combines the speed and efficiency of a commercial service with the care and attention that only an NREN can provide

Costs

The following items are the cost components for an NREN joining and co-providing the service:

Initial set-up and deployment costs (approx. one person-month if using the GÉANT tool kit)

  • Access port/Bandwidth to GÉANT
  • Cross traffic
  • Hosting of local components for provisioning tool (if AutoBAHN and cNIS,  VMs) + monitoringTraining of staff
  • Manpower for upgrades/update of the software, maintenance
  • PR and outreach

Time Available now.

Lead time to deploy if using GÉANT tool kit (cNIS, AutoBAHN): approximately one person-month (if technology proxy needed).
Alternatives Manual configuration (fixed lines) and overprovisioning.
Advantages

Co-developed by and for the NREN community rather than to generate profit.

Possibility to influence the development of the software used to deliver the service.

Interoperability with other offerings at the global level.

EngagementUsers have access to regular workshops where they can contribute to the development of the service and see their needs and requirements addressed.
