The Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association (TERENA) offers a forum to collaborate, innovate and share knowledge in order to foster the development of Internet technology, infrastructure and services to be used by the research and education community.
The community of national research and education networking organisations (NRENs) has found that it is in a good position to provide audio and video recording, repository and distribution services to universities (where e.g., lectures can be recorded, archived and distributed), taking into account special requirements regarding quality, searchability, copyright, policy, etc. The goal is to identify potential roles in developing this area, as well as the core group of researchers willing to work on the technical and administrative issues around those roles.

Founded in 2007, the Opencast Community is a global community addressing all facets of academic video; members are academic institutions mainly, but the community is open to individuals and companies as well. The Opencast Community supports a number of projects with the overall goal of facilitating the management of audiovisual content. The most prominent among these, the Opencast Matterhorn Project is developing an Open Source management system for academic video, mainly to organize, record, handle and distribute lecture recordings, providing users with tools to engage with the resulting rich medium beyond the mere consumption. The Opencast Community considers itself the community around Matterhorn very much.

The idea is to make the two networks aware of their respective work and to collaborate in areas where the focus is similar: Metadata, legal issues, and discussions of general topics around academic video (codecs, licensing, technology). Dedicated collaborations should be fostered, e.g. with respect to technological exchange.

While both communities are open for collaboration in principle, their composition is different: TERENA and TF-Media have a European emphasis (with a distinct collaboration towards Australia) and are very much driven by the various NREN. This differs from the Opencast Community, mainly driven by academic institutions. While this might imply differences with respect some domains in detail (service provision, policies etc.), the overall goals are very similar: To foster the exchange of information around academic video, to advocate the exchange of academic video (i.e. their metadata) and to consider opportunities for technological cooperation.

As a community around Opencast Matterhorn, the Opencast Community would like to raise awareness to Matterhorn with TF-Media and the participating NREN. While Matterhorn is designed to serve academic institutions in the first instance, its framework and design should also allow for the requirements of other organizations: NREN could use Matterhorn services to provide services to academic institutions where centralized services make sense or institutions don't have the resources to establish their own (Matterhorn).
